It was a lot tougher being a Lovecraft fan in the 1970s. Hardly any of his work was in print. I owned no Lovecraft books except for an extremely worn copy of The Colour out of Space. I read what I could in libraries, but his work had fallen so far off the horizon that it was hard just finding a bibliography. At some point in the late 1970s I heard of "Dream Quest" and discovered that it was so rare as to be virtually nonexistent. I finally managed to read a copy in 1981 or 1982 in the stacks of the Duke University library (it was a reserve book, of course). My anecdote aside, this is an very good tale that shouldn't have been so hard to find, and now that virtually all Lovecraft is back in print, you should buy (and hoard) a copy for yourself if you have any interest in Lovecraft in longer form.

This book was my introduction to the worlds of HP Lovecraft. I found it in the library, was enthralled for some reason by the title, and took it home to read it. Unfortunately, I took it back when I was done. It took me another eight years to find the Ballantine paperback, when a whole series of HPL was published. Because I remembered this book so fondly, I bought the whole series sight unseen, and have never had a second thought about that decision. tDQoUK is extremely accessible to readers of fantasy in particular, and readers in general. Lovecraft's imagination takes flight in his descriptions of the Dreamlands, with exotic creatures and locales abounding, and a strange little mission undertaken to petition the gods of that land. Strongly influenced by the work of Lord Dunsany, Lovecraft would never again write with such hope and beauty, though his writing would grow stronger as his mature voice emerged. This book is not horror, but high fantasy without elves and swords, rare in these days of Tolkienesque pastiche. Buy it, read it, and your imagination may never be the same again. Join me on the seven hundred steps to the gate of the Dreamlands, and don't forget to count. I'll see you in the Enchanted Wood.

The cover misleads completely. This is Lovecraft working in the mode of Lord Dunsany-- not creeping horror or dark elder gods, but a more genteel and poetical fantasy in the classic "mortal wandering off into fairyland" mode. For Lovecraft completists, this is a fascinating look at what other sorts of work he could do when he chose to, but for folks who love his better horror stories, this will come as rather a disappointment.

One of the most beautiful books written, Lovecraft's story of the pursuit into the world of dreams, searching for the unknown city. Inspired by Lord Dunsunay and Windsor McKay's Little Nemo, but pure Lovecraft, and unequaled. The city of cats, the vast fantasy worlds; and an ending of aching beauty. I read it my second summer of college; and could not tell if I was dreaming. Read it!

I will preface this review with a disclosure: I am a die-hard fan of Lovecraft's cosmic horror genre, particularly the Cthulhu mythos stories, and am not especially fond of the works in his Dream Cycle into which this title falls. That said, it is a well written fantasy adventure couched in Lovecraft’s typically vivid imagery. I chose to read it due to its recurrent story line involving the cats of Ulthar because I love the fantasy cat genre in literature to which Lovecraft always does more than justice. If like me and protagonist Randolph Carter, you love “nothing on earth more than small black kittens”, maybe this novella is for you! As far as the narration is concerned, the lively and whimsical style Jim Roberts adopts is well suited to such a fantastic narrative.

Brilliance puts out some really cool audio cds and I have a few. This one is pretty good. My only complaint is with the reader. He is not a trained vocal actor and that is apparent in the careless way he pronounces some of the Lovecraftian terms in the story and his New York accent penetrates through. I love NY...hell I've been a Giants fan for 54 years. I grew up an hour away, but this is one of the cases where the flat, middle America radio voice would have been preferable. I finf=d the accent and mispronunciations to be distracting.

To the initiate, this book will seem esoteric. To the initiated, this book will seem like the first step of the journey. For HP Lovecraft, it was the first step and the last. This was written before much of his better known works, yet, I found that it had more depth than many of them. Truly, I have enjoyed "The Color of Space" and many many of his shorts; however, the pure madness of the creativity of this many was demonstrated most assuredly in this novelette.

I think these are the best written stories in his body of work, perhaps not as canonical as Cthulu and all, but evocative of the same sort of celestial terror behind our puny lives. And the adventures in the dream lands fun for the reader and perhaps easier than when the weirdness is in our world.

Only Lovecraft could pull of something so hair brained, with a meandering plot and make it readable. It was an agonizing read; it plodded along like a mare that was ten years past a glue factory. But you had to keep reading; I put it down and like an Old God it called to me even as I slept.
